How To Sound Like a Wine Connoisseur – Part 2

Wine Glass

In our previous blog, we learnt how to sound like a Wine Connoisseur. Here are some more useful terminology to help you further!

Useful terminology

Ever heard wine described as ‘spicy’ or ‘lush’? These adjectives are used to describe a wine’s flavor, and fall into three broad and widely-used categories . Describing wine thus will help establish your ‘connoisseur’ credentials.
High Tannin: some wines seem to suck the moisture out of your mouth; the same sensation you would have when eating a jambul or raw guava. This is due to the high level of tannins—which are a chemical compound that is also found in tea—in the wine. When remarking on this particular attribute, you would say, ‘hmmm, this wine is highly tannic’ or ‘this is a high tannin wine’.

Round: these wines have less tannin and are therefore ‘smoother’ and silkier to the taste. This type of wine is described as having ‘round notes’.

Spicy: wines with a ‘bite’ or high levels of acidity, are referred to as ‘spicy’. This is because they make your tongue smart the same way that biting into a raw chili would. Of such a wine you would quite simply say, ‘this one’s a spicy number!’

Let’s raise a toast to your new found knowledge. But remember, ‘in vino veritas’—in wine is truth. Drink in moderation during your exposition or you just might just give the game away! Salud!

Wine FAQS: Part 2

September 23, 2014 Leave a comment

In our previous post, we covered Wine FAQs Part 1, where many of the questions about wine were answered. Wine is one such topic that might seem intimidation at first, but once you understand the etiquettes of wine drinking, you will thoroughly enjoy the experience. Here are the answers to some of the questions that pop up while discussing wine.

1. Is drinking wine good for you?
It is believed that drinking a glass of wine a day keeps the doctor away. This is true! Moderate drinking of one or two units of red wine a day lowers cholesterol levels and protects the heart from ailments. Wine contains high amounts of antioxidants, which builds immunity and increases longevity of the person.

2. What is the best way to save leftover wine?
Keeping leftover wine away from air is the only way to save it. The best way to save leftover wine is to transfer it into a smaller container and store it in the refrigerator. Another way is to pour the leftover wine into an ice tray and freeze it. This can be used for cooking later on. However, it’s best to finish the wine bottle once opened, since storing it might weaken the flavor of the wine.

3. What exactly are ‘legs’ and what do they tell you?
Smell, swirl, sip and savour are the four steps to enjoying wine. When you swirl wine in a wine glass, tears of wine stream down on the sides of the glass. These tear streams of wine are called ‘Legs’ in wine lingo. The quality, alcohol content and consistency of the wine can be judged looking at these wine tears.

4. How do you tell if a wine is too old to drink?
Storing an open bottle of wine is not an easy task. If you have an opened bottle of wine which you are not able to finish, chances are that it will spoil if not stored carefully. This is because of the oxidization process that takes place the minute the bottle is uncorked. You can tell immediately if the wine is too old or spoilt to drink. The wine will have sherry-like smell and will taste dull and lifeless. The white wines usually darken in colour while the red wines lose its rich red colour and turn dull brown or lighter red.

We hope these helped you understand wine a little better than before. Follow this space to learn more about your favourite drink.

Wine bottle is the most appreciated gift one can give or receive! It is a gift, which can be given to your friends and family no matter what the occasion, and it will always bring a smile to their faces. Wine bottles by themselves look quite elegant and classy, but if you are buying it for a special occasion, you might as well put in some effort and gift-wrap the wine bottle.  While a wine bottle is an easy gift to give, but it’s difficult to wrap. Here are some ideas to help you gift-wrap a bottle of wine without having to spend too much on the packing.

  1. The easiest way to wrap it is to put it in a gift box. This will save you time and effort and it will still look presentable and better than just handing out a bottle. You can also stick a bow made of ribbons on the bottle to give it a more fun and joyful attire.
  2. One of the most simple and attractive ways to decorate the wine bottle is using Satin ribbon. Buy large double satin ribbon and start wrapping the bottle from the bottom, use glue at the bottom to secure the ribbon and wrap the whole bottle with it. Make a neat, nice bow with twirls and stick it on the mouth of the bottle. This kind of wrapping adds oomph to the bottle.
  3. You can use rope or natural fibre like jute, straw or twine to wrap the bottle. These are extremely cool and elegant options, you can use to gift-wrap the wine bottle for occasions like birthdays and anniversaries. They are also great as corporate gifts.
  4. Another simple and cost-effective idea to wrap your bottle of wine is slipping it into in one of the pouches that are readily available in the market. These pouches can be stitched at home with glamorous, glittery cloth to custom-fit the bottle. The best part is that these pouches can be reused for storing small items at home. This can be a perfect housewarming or a get-together gift.

Whatever you choose, make sure the packing doesn’t look tacky. If at any point you feel the bottle isn’t looking attractive, don’t hesitate to strip the wrapping off and gift it the way it is! It is better to give a gift, which is plain and elegant rather than giving one, which looks over-embellished.
