Five Wine Cocktails to Warm You Up for the Holidays

December 23, 2013 Leave a comment

While it may not be snowing outside, Christmas and the New Year are excellent times to snuggle up and enjoy a spicy cocktail of your favorite wine. It’s also a great idea to serve a gigantic punch bowl of a fruity cocktail at a Christmas Party to get the cheer going. Let’s take a look at a couple of easy-to- make and delicious cocktails for the Christmas Season:

Undoubtedly one of the most popular wine cocktails because of its fruity notes, citrus additions and the clincher- its impossible to make a “bad” Sangria. While traditional Sangrias are made of red wine, white wine sangrias have gained popularity of late. A blend of lime, orange juice, brandy, cherries, triple sec and sliced oranges- sangria is the cocktail to get the party started and keep it going!

 The Spritzer

Extremely popular in Europe and generally popular everywhere else in the world, the white wine Spritzer is the perfect casual cocktail.  With only two ingredients- white wine and soda, it tops the cocktail list of any hostess. Ideal for those not looking to drink too heavily in the holiday season – the Spritzer is light, airy and brightens up the cold winter with a  warm hint of summer sunshine.

Wine Cooler

Nothing is more in these days than going retro- so in a tribute to the not-so-long-ago 80s , the Winer Cooler is staging a comeback! Simple to create and tasty to boot – all you need for this one is your choice of wine (red or white), a sweetened soda ( Sprite or 7 Up), grape juice, pineapple juice and lime juice all well blended in your punch bowl! For an added retro feel, see if you can locate and serve up this treat in retro glass soda bottles.

Peach and Honey White Wine Slushy

Not recommended for diabetics, this one is definitely for those with an incurable sweet tooth. Here’s what you’ll need – a blender, peaches, ice, honey, orange liqueur, peach liquer  and of course, you favorite Nine Hills White! It’s simple tumble together recipe! Just add all the ingredients to the blender and hit “Blend”! Pour over ice and serve with a straw!

 Mulled Wine

A holiday favorite from days of yore…nothing says Christmas like a tumbler of warm spiced wine. This one is going to take some cooking! You will need to add red wine, cinnamon, cloves, brandy, sugar and ginger to a cooking pot and heat it on a slow flame for 20 to 25 minutes.  Serve warm and remember to leave the spices behind when you ladle it into separate glasses. Garnish with a Cinnamon stick that doubles up as stirrer!

Cooking with wine could be that one little secret which could impart an exotic and wonderful flavor to your food dishes. Wine is used in three ways in the kitchen: as a marinade ingredient, as a cooking liquid and as a flavoring in the dish towards its finish.

It was to introduce wine as an ingredient in food dishes that Chef Michael Swamy in association Nine Hills Wine and Starwoods Hotel started his 7 days, 7 cities, 7 chefs ‘Wine in Food’ odyssey to bring wine to the kitchen. The 7 cities that got to learn and taste the ‘Wine in Food’ yummies were : Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Gurgaon, Chennai, Dhaka and Hyderabad.

What started beautifully on 29th Nov, 2013 in Mumbai ended deliciously on 10th Dec, 2013 in Hyderabad. The ‘Wine in Food’ event with Chef Michael Swamy was a great gastronomic success.
